Vitamin D and its function
Vitamin D3 is found naturally almost exclusively in animal foods such as fish, dairy products, eggs, and meat. Some plants, including lichens, and various fungi also contain vitamin D. Mushrooms, however, contain the less effective vitamin D2.

Unlike many other vitamins, vitamin D converts into a crucial hormone in the body that regulates cellular function and many bodily processes . Nearly all body cells have specific receptors for this vitamin D hormone and require an adequate supply of vitamin D to function properly.
Vitamin D is a cofactor in the regulation of calcium metabolism. It controls bone-forming and bone-degrading cells and important transport molecules that ensure proper calcium utilization.
